Fantasy Basketball 2023-24: Three Centers About to Break Out

Albion Moving Forward.

Everything I've read and seen throughout the offseason and preseason has me excited about what the third-year center can bring to the Rockets and fantasy players this season. He was the best fantasy player for the Houston Rockets last season (which isn't saying much since he ranked 85th in average value), but the adjustments to the Rockets coaching staff and roster will only benefit Sangin.

He had a mini-breakout last season, improving his scoring average by more than five points per game, averaging nearly 10 rebounds per game, and shooting more than 7 percent from the field. He also did it all in 30 minutes a night.

Anytime a player becomes more effective because he is used more and involved in the offense, it's a good sign.

The previous coaching staff needed to play more to his strengths as a versatile, organized offensive big man. Ime Udoka emphasized getting him to initiate the offense more often and encouraging him to shoot more when defenders get in trouble:

Sengu has been working on expanding his range all offseason and is confident in his growth as a shooter. He may fit nicely on the free throw shooter list, as he's shot in the mid to upper 70s so far, but with an improved shooting percentage, who's to say he won't rise to the mid to upper 70s this season?

Defense has been an issue. Early reports indicate that he's been active on the blocked shot offense and has worked hard to prove that he won't be a liability for defenders. And it's not like he's a total taper, either; he's been very good. He's averaged over 1.8 steals per game (steals + caps) over two seasons, so an investment on the defensive end will only improve his bottom line.

Sengu's potential is too great to ignore, and having a capable coaching staff and bringing in proven veterans can only have a positive impact on Sengu's prospects this year. A 17/10/5 line on both strands is achievable, and if the efficiency stays the same, his fifth-round value will look irreverent.

Jalen Durham.

By all accounts, Durham's rookie season was a success. He was named to the Rookie of the Year team and contributed 9.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.6 rebounds per game while shooting 61 percent from the field. Not bad for a player who only played 25 minutes a night and had to compete for playing time with numerous big men all year.

Like Morioka, Durant will benefit from a new coaching staff and better talent around him. Monty Williams said that James Wiseman and Marvin Bagley III were battling for the backup center spot and Durant was named the starter. It's great to have that position established from the start, especially when starting point guard Cade Cunningham is back and ready to rock.

The chemistry between Cunningham and Durham is undeniable - they were the talk of the Selects this summer after pulling off some seemingly indefensible blocks - so this is just a snapshot of what we can expect this season.

Durham has been compared to Dwight Howard - you know, the guy who should be in the Hall of Fame and is one of the best big men of this era. In case you missed it, he put up a Dwight-esque performance last year, contributing 30 points, 17 rebounds and four caps per game. Don't fall asleep at the wheel with the loss of this one either!

Mark Williams.

Williams is a rookie first-round pick, but there's no doubting his talent. He was one of the best defensive players in college basketball last season, winning the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award. He also showed offensive potential, contributing 11.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Williams is expected to fill in for Mason Plumlee in Charlotte this season, but has a chance to earn a starting spot if he can prove himself in training camp. Even if he's not the starter, he'll see plenty of playing time, especially with the Hornets lack of depth at center.

Williams' biggest strength is his rim protection. He stands at 7 feet (89 cm).
